Why does my start date not change on a dependent task?

This problem is happening even with a fresh project.

I create 2 tasks, task A and task B. Automatically they both start with
today's date.
Link the tasks so that task B has A as the predecessor with a
Finish-to-Start link.
Set the duration of task A to 5d.

I would expect that this would change task B's start date to 5d later. It
isn't. The link on the Gantt chart indicates a FS start, even though it looks
like they both are starting today.

What am I doing wrong?

I want Project to automatically update task B's start date.

The setup you describe should work as you expect. I am not sure why it
isn't. Do you see any constraints on task B that would not allow it to move
to the finish of task A?

It sounds as though these are new tasks, but ensure there are no acutals
recorded against Task B.
