why doesn't the status bar work?

The "line" and "at" in my status bar will not work even though I have status
bar checked in the tools, options, view menu. The insertion pointer is in
the window. How do I turn these on? I am using Microsoft Office 2003.

Probably because you are working in Normal view and "background
repagination" is turned off in Tools | Options | General.
