"Windows cannot find" a Word file opened from Groove

Following Vista install, I've been unable to open some Word docs from Groove.
A double click triggers Word to open, but then the following error: "Windows
cannot find (file name) ...). The problem seems to affect Word only . Excel
and Access files and some Word docs still open. Does anyone know of a fix?

ajb,

What versions of Groove and Office are you running? What is the file
extension of the Word documents you cannot open?

Version is 2007 (4.20.2623) MSO (12.0.6017.5000). File extensions affected
are doc and docx

ajb,

Can you take a look at where your temp directories are set up in Vista and
in Word?

In Vista you can look in the System control panel under Advanced system
settings> select the "Advanced" tab and check the environmental variables for
where the temp directory is located on your system.

In Word 2007, click on the "pearl" and select "Word options" then select
"Save" - check to see where the default location is.

What is very odd in this case is that the behavior of all the files launched
from Groove Files Tools should be identical, as we open a copy in temp and
use that to invoke the host application when the file is double clicked. This
almost sounds like Word is expecting the file in a different location.

Let me know what you find.

I also have exactly the same problem, however, if I let excel open with a
blank background and then choose "open" and select the item I want from the
recent list it usually opens but not always - any ideas please?

Thanks pmg and apologies for the delay. User variables for Owner: TEMP/TMP=
%USERPROFOLE%\AppData\Local\Temp
System variables: TEMP/TMP C:\Windows\TEMP
In Word, default location is C:\Users\Owner\Documents\
I've discovered another curious thing. If I open Word from Groove, I get the
"Windows cannot find" message. If I then click on "OK", minimise Word and
reopen the document from Groove, it opens without a problem. I've repeated
this on 15-20 occasions without variation. Back to you.

If it is of any help, right click on the file and click "Edit". Should open
the file in Word 2007. Solves the problem for me. (Vista Word 2007). If you
right click on the file and select "Open" I get the "Windows cannot find the
file..." message... I have read on a couple of forums that this is a Windows
issue not a Word 2007 issue and is being fixed by Microsoft in Vista Service
Pack 1. Hope that helps.

I have a similar problem. I am unable to open some Word files from the File
Manager. A double click triggers Word to open, but I get the same error
message. I can only open the files from Word. No problem, so far, with Excel
files, only Word files.

Thanks PokerAddict, but unfortunately it wasn't a solution for me. I get the
same response. If I right click on the doc, then on Edit, I still get the
"Windows cannot find ..." message. If I then minimise Word, right click on
the doc and select "Edit" again, the doc opens.

i had this prob on a customers pc & cured it by accident by fitting another
gig of ram (for another reason) ... well worth a try if you can borrow a
stick from someone to see if it works for you

I have exactly the same problem on both a laptop (2 gigs of memory) and
desktop (1 gig of memory). Both are running Vista Business 64-bit (VB64).
If I double-click on a doc (or docx) file WORD opens but says it cannot find
the file (the one on which I just double-clicked). It behaves the same if I
right-click and choose OPEN. However, after the initial failure, if I
right-click and choose OPEN, the file will open. After having successfully
opening one file and exiting from WORD, if I choose another and double-click
(or right-click/OPEN) , it still fails.

It seems more like a WORD 2007 problem rather than a Vista problem because
EXCEL and other Office software do not exhibit the anomaly.

I have not tried installing Office 2007 in any but a VB64 system. Frankly
I've been hesitant to try and it's keeping me from fully embracing Office
2007.
