Windows Installer every time open Pub2000

A few weeks ago, I had to reinstall Office 2000
Professional Edition because of problems using the online
Office Updater. Now, everything works except that when I
open Publisher 2000, the Windows Installer insists on
running - presumably updating something - then it closes
and Pub2000 finishes opening and works fine. The symptom
is very similar to what MS documents in KB265194 - except
that Windows Installer only runs when opening Publisher.
I have tried everything that KB265194 suggests - in
addition to removing mspub.exe and letting it reinstall.
Still, there is no change - I see the blasted Windows
Installer dialog every time I open Publisher. Any
suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

For what it's worth, KB265194 fixed my Windows Installer issue with Word
2000. I had to go to the registry edit but I've lost *most* of my fear of
fiddling around with the Registry.

Here's another article that may address the issue:
