Word '08 + Snow Leopard + Notebook View

JuanGuapo

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard)
Processor: Intel

Word '08 is completely unusable for me.

I upgraded to Snow Leopard, and each time I try to switch to Notebook View, it crashes.

On all three of our Macs, we are having this problem.

Any thoughts?

Hi Juan:

This is not Twitter, expect as much as 24 hours between your question and
the response.

I am answering you at 09:17 Saturday morning: I think that's pretty good for
a Saturday :)

It sounds as though you may have not applied the updates to your Office 2008
installation. To run well in OS 10.6, Office requires updates 12.2.0 and
12.2.1.

Since the system is now in a mess, I recommend that you follow this
procedure exactly. If for some reason you cannot complete a step this way,
I suggest that you check back with us before doing something else, otherwise
we might make the problem worse.

1) Microsoft Office must be in "As Installed" condition, or the updates
will fail to apply.

If anyone has modified Microsoft Office or moved bits of it since it was
installed ( am thinking "Monolingual" or any of the other "optimiser"
applications) , run the Remove Office tool from /Applications/Microsoft
Office 2008/Additional Tools/Remove Office

2) If you had to Remove, re-install Microsoft Office from the CD, and
ensure you install it on the boot partition.

3) Download the 12.2.0 from the Microsoft site
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx?pid=Mactopia_Office2008&fid=3001
33BB-B5F7-4946-BB7B-B0C6C6D6E28C#viewer

4) Save it somewhere all three machines can access it: it's a large file
and you are going to need it three times. You must apply the updates in
sequence, 12.2.1 won't apply until 12.2.0 is in place.

5) Run Disk Utility and repair permissions.

4) Disconnect any external drives other than the network.

6) Reboot the machine and ensure that none of the Microsoft applications
start.

7) Double-click the update to apply it.

8) When the update completes, restart the machine

9) Run FontBook and remove the duplicates.

10) Now download and apply the 12.2.1 patch.

That should sort it out for you. The reason for the rather lengthy and
convoluted procedure is that the computer is potentially in an "uncertain"
state, so we need to cover all bases to give the best chance of resolving
the issue.

Hope this helps

Guess not.

Hi John,

Thank you for the response, although I could do without the attitude in the beginning. ;)

I was already running 12.2.1 prior to the upgrade but have since had to uninstall Office 2008 altogether; it appears that this helped but only time will tell. I really appreciate the step-by-step walkthrough, it appears we thought of the same thing but I was hoping to avoid a complete uninstall/re-install. ::bangs head on desk::

Originally, I had noticed on a ZDnet blog that a writer was having the same exact issue I was having (see below), so I thought I'd post and see if anyone else was having the same issue (and possibly a fix).

Hi Juan--just an FYI--I had the same issue running Word, and I had all the latest updates applied. I was annoyed by the tone of the previous poster as well, and wanted to let you know that this issue is real.

Regardless, this is what worked for me (so far, fingers crossed):

1. Uninstall Office using the Remove Office program.
2. Remove (trash) the microsoft folder from the fonts folder. Then delete the word plist from your user library preferences folder.
3. Run disk utility to repair permissions and restart.
4. Run Snow Leopard cache cleaner and do a deep clean on the cache of your system.
5. Run Easy Find to find "fontcachetool" (it's an invisiable file, so make sure you enable easyfind to locate invisible files. Trash the fontcachetool file once it's located. Note: I actually had two of these files, and I trashed them both.
6. Restart.
7. Run disk utility to repair permissions again, and restart.
8. Install Office 2008.
9. Do NOT open any Office programs, and restart.
10. Install SP 1 (note: I installed this from a disk image. My previous attempts to use the automatic check for updates "feature" in Office to download and install the program did not work--believe me, I uninstalled and reinstalled Office three times before performing the tasks I am listing here. You can download the disk images of the SP here:
SP 1 (12.1.0): <http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...87-A3A6-4106-A0F8-4D6E1D6D89D2&displaylang=en>

SP 2 (12.2.0): <http://support.microsoft.com/kb/973254>

Update 3 (12.2.1): <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downlo...d=9730452B-E6AD-4330-93E4-57F66293BF1C#viewer>

11. Restart
12. Install 12.2.0. Restart.
13. Install 12.2.1. Restart
14. Repair permissions.
15. Restart.

So far so good. I hope this helps.

Yeah, well I was going to help, but since you guys don't like it when
someone calls you on YOUR attitude, you're on your own.

You have a nice day, now, y'hear :)

OK, I'm sorry, I shouldn't have said that. I apologise.

Juan, I am sorry if my attitude offended you, I apologise for that too.
