Word crashes when switching to notebook view

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel I can open word but when I switch to notebook view, it immediately crashes. It worked fine for 3 months during the last semester. I was starting an outline within notebook view when it happened the first time. After that, it crashed and continued to crash immediately after restarting and attempting to switch to notebook view. I reinstalled office but that didn't change how it reacted.

I was able to open another document that was already in notebook view and from there was able to open a document in notebook view. I can't recreate the problem and so it seems to have fixed itself.

Notebook View is extremely fragile.

It is a special usage of Section Breaks and Styles, and relies on the
settings in the document's section breaks and styles being correct.

Generally it is best to create a Notebook document fresh each time: they can
be troublesome if you copy them.

"Converting" a document from Notebook View to Page Layout or vice-versa
should be avoided, it's likely to break it.

If problems start in fresh Notebook documents, it can help to delete
Normal.dotm template.

Generally, it is best to use dedicated Outlining software rather than rely
on Notebook Layout. Yes, it is convenient, but it is not "reliable". Which
matters most to you?

Hope this helps

Thanks for the words of caution. Do you have any particular programs in mind? I switched over from a pc early last semester and to that point had gotten used to using OneNote. I liked the organizational flexibility. I guess one option is to put PC style office on via bootcamp and my old Vista disk, but I'd like to stick with something that runs on 10.6 and not switch back and forth between os'. Any advice you might have in this area would be greatly appreciated.

If you already have licensed Windows Office & Windows OS you might want to
consider using Parallels Desktop or VMWare Fusion to install Windows as a
virtual machine. As a vm you do not have to reboot... You can operate your
Mac as a Mac while running Windows software in the vm & work back & forth
between the environments like switching between applications. You can also
share files as well as drives & other devices.
