Word 2003 and display Drivers, and images not refreshing

It seems quite evident that users are experiencing problems in word 2003 with
the screen not refreshing images.
As noted in many of the posts, it is advised to udate your video drivers
from the manufacture. Seems this has helped a few but not all.
In all cases I have read so far, there was never a problem until the user
started using Word 2003, previous versions all worked just fine.
In my case I have a ATI 9600 chipset and have updated to the latest drivers,
all current office updates, all current Windows XP SP2 updates and the
problem still persists.

The problem is in general that an image can be placed into the document and
then when ever a portion or all of the image scrolls of the page and then you
scroll back it is not redrawn. Same is true if you were to take another
window and move it across the top of the word document, it will erase or
leave a blank spot.
In my case I had to move down two steps with the hardware acceleration
which disables DriectX and Direct3D features.

I don't like to point fingers, just resolve the issues, but in this case I
have had to modify my hardware settings to make full use of the Word program
and that's not right!

Frankly I don't think it's the video card manufactures that have the
problem, but a change in the design of MS word, albeit, MS and the video
manufactures need to get together address this issue ASAP.

I agree, and have also noticed, not necessarily in the massive number of
problems, but the type reported. I tried two Microsoft Office 2003 Editions,
and was not satisfied, with the lack of quality, and functionality. There is
also not Clip Art Gallery, in any of the new releases. Didn't care for the
Clip Organizer (too disorganized). Just my opinion, others might enjoy it
just fine. I have since returned to Microsoft Office 2000 Small Business.
Sure it has it's share of problems, and I guess you have to pick your poison.

Hi Mike,

Word works graphic card drivers harder than most other
apps. This is not a new issue, but goes back to at
least Office 97. Each time, the makers of the card
and or printer drivers has updated and that has been
the resolution of the problem. ATI pushes their
hardware very hard and also have been one of the most
frequent updaters of their drivers (and not just for
MS Word issues <g>)

Setting hardware acceleration to maximum/full is not
always, in any application, the most efficient setting.
It can, actually, waste CPU cycles in trying to synch
multiple operations going on with the computers.

The issue basically resurfaced with changes in Windows XP SP2
in some cases. It's not uncommon, although unfortunate, for
one change in software or hardware in a computer to in turn
drive a need for an update somewhere else.

The chip manufacturers do work with the software folks to
get things to stay compatible, there can be a 'lag time' though
from when one company 'releases' their update for other companies
to do the same (i.e. they're waiting for the 'final' version of
something before committing their resources).
