Word 2003 Does Not Allow Saving A Document

L

Linda

I recently had to do a clean uninstall of Office 2003 due to an error message
I was receiving in Access 2003 and then reinstalled at a Microsoft
Technicians request to help resolve the problem.

However, after reinstalling, I am unable to save any of the Word documents
that I have created during the past few days.

Anyone else have this issue and if so, how did you resolve it?

What happens when you try to save? If you get an error message,
please quote the message exactly.

Linda

absolutely nothing happens, no error message, it doesn't freeze, absolutley
nothing. It just stays in my document.

At the bottom left corner of the Word window, does it say
"Modification not allowed because the document is locked for
editing"? If yes, then click on Help | Activate Product, and
follow the instructions on the screen.

As I said earlier, it was activated when I reinstalled it. And no, it
doesn't say "document locked". But thanks for that tidbit. It could have
been helpful if I had that note at the bottom of the screen.

Linda:

I'm having the same exact problem. Mine started when I was working on a
document on my work server from home thru a broadband (Comcast) connection.
Somewhere along the way, the connection was disabled while I was modifying
the document. I checked the Knowledge Base and the only thing I could find
referenced permissions and FAT vs. NTFS structures . . . . Great! :-(

D.J., can't say that I've had that problem although I do have a comcast
connection as well. This is a very perplexing problem. I think I'll have to
bite the bullet and rebuild this system. It's about due, it's just a hassle
to do that.

If anyone has any better suggestions, D.J. and I are ALL ears

Hey! Before you do that, try replacing your "normal.dot" template with
either a saved one, or one off of an install disk. I uninstalled Word,
reinstalled it, repaired it, etc. and nothing worked . . . . until I copied
an old "normal.dot" that I had on another computer to the "C:\Documents and
Settings\'your name'\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates" folder. And then
"viola"! I could save again!

I am having the same problem and when I save the program locks up and I have

Bill,

I finally gave it up and backed up all of my data and reformatted the hard
drive and started over. No problems now. Who knows what caused it. But
nothing else seemed to work.

Good Luck!

Michael,
I have no idea what was going on, that I couldn't save documents, but as of
5 days ago I can save documents again and have no idea why it is now
working??? Bill Gates must have waved his magic wand... if I figure out why
this has corrected its self I will let you know... Good Luck and happy
Holidays!!!Bill

I am having a similar problem. After months of Word 2003 working fine on
Vista Ultimate, starting yesterday I cannot save any document. I can create
a new document, I can open an existing document but cannot save any of them
in any manner.

Sounds like you have installed something that has placed an incompatible
add-in into Word (or Office). Have you installed anything new lately such as
a scanner, OCR or Acrobat that would install macros in Word? What happens if
you start Word in Safe Mode? Does it let you open and save a document then?
From Start Run (Winkey+R) type in

winword /a

and press enter. Test opening and saving now.

I just had this exact problem today, and I also could no longer launch a new
document from my Word quicklaunch icon. I used Terry's suggestion of running
Winword from Run (the /a did not work on mine), and that new Word document
WOULD save to a file. I then copied everything out of the document that
would NOT save into the new document that WOULD save, and it worked fine. No
idea why or what happened, but it hasn't recurred.

I have this problem too, the symptoms being that when I hot save or save as
nothing happens, no error, no freeze... the save window refuses to open...
before this happened, the window opened, but when you put a save name and hit
save, it just erased the name and sat there...

But right now, nothing happens. I can edit to my hearts content.
