Word Document Locked

When trying to open a Word document I get a message saying the document is locked for editing by another user. Ther
is also an insturction to click "notify" to open a read only copy of the document and receive notification when the document is no longer in use. I am the only user. How do I solve this problem so I can open and make changes to the document. Thank you.
