Word doesn't paste from clipboard if not open first

I can't get word to paste from the clipboard if Word is not open when I copy the text. How do I fix this ?

If you got Word as part of Works Suite, this is the work of the Microsoft
Works Suite Add-in for Word--just one of its many nasty habits. Uninstall
the add-in through Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs.

No, I don't use Word as my e-mail editor

My PC is set up the same way as when I had Office 2002 installed, and the Clipboard paste function worked.
