word has tons of names in hidden text attached

some word files have hundreds of names (some i recognize
but most i don't) attached -- and other word files become
infected when i call them up and close them. these hidden
names can be seen in bbedit. is this a virus? how do i get
rid of it?

Your description isn't very detailed, which makes it
difficult. Plus, it doesn't belong in a VBA (programming)
group.

My guess would be that you have "Recover text from any
file" instead of "Word document" selected as the file type
in File/Open.
