Word Hyperlinks lost when text in box put behind picture, why?

I need to hperlink text in boxes hidden in a picture. I am using
Word 2000. I create the text box at a specific point on a picture whixh was
pasted on the page earlier. Then I hperlink the text in the box to a specific
Adobe file. The link on test works fine. I then go to Format/text
box/layout, and select 'behind the text', when completion, the text is now
hidden by the picture, but now the hyperlink is not working. I am sure that
when I tried this once before in the past. the link remained even though the
text was hidden..Any help would be appreciated.

You can hyperlink the graphic itself; perhaps that's what you remember
doing.

I should have mentioned, I need to have three or more hidden text boxes in a
single picture with individual hyperlinks. Hyperlinking to the text box
would only allow one link, and I am still fairly certain that I was able to
do this once before. Thanks for the input.

It seems to me that the hyperlinks would still work if the text boxes were
in front of the graphic. If the text boxes had no line and no fill and the
hyperlink had no display text, they would be invisible but still functional,
I think.

I think what youare suggesting is close to what I worked out this morning. I
opened a text box over the area of the picture that was appropriate, filled
it with periods (....), and then selected no fill for both the box and the
line, and make the periods a color to match the area of the picture. But,
after reading your second note, I tried it the way you suggested without the
text and the link held. Thanks
