This can happen when the previous levels get scrambled in the "Number
format" box. Sometimes the easiest thing is to wipe the whole thing and
start over from scratch, manually inserting each previous level.

Yikes! I could not possibly start from scratch since this is a very big
document and I even have to make serveral smaller documents combined
together using INCLUDE_TEXT. This document is more than 200 pages long with
tens of sections.

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Thanks for the links!!

I've exactly followed this guide since the begning:
http://www.shaunakelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

to avoid all the corruption in Word. Even though it still giving me bad luck
down the track :(( This is a very good guide and it taught me about word
numbering in details.

Knowing that I've followed the proper guidelines from an expert, what
problem do you think I'm currently having?

Thanks again!!

Listen to Suzanne. She has much more experience with this than I do. Her
advice to start from scratch is not something to shrug off. You would save
your document to a text file so you don't have to retype it. Just open the
text file in Word and start applying styles to rematch your old formatting.
This is the only way I know of to get rid of numbering corruption. It isn't
something that goes away if you ignore it.

Hi David,

Are new paragraphs ok?
And are existing paragraphs fixed if you use Ctrl+Q (ResetPara) on them?

Then your style definitions might be fine, and you might be able to fix the old wrong numbers by re-applying the style.
To do so, use "Find/Replace" to replace the style with itself (say for example "Format > Style: Heading 1" both in "Find what" and "Replace with", leaving the boxes empty).

Greetings,
Klaus

If not, you could try to "unscramble" the numbers in the number format box.
Also Suzanne meant to start from scratch with your numbering setup, not your document!

Right. I meant that when the numbering becomes jumbled in the Numbering
dialog, sometimes you have to delete everything from the "Number format" box
and rebuild the numbering by using the "Previous level number" to insert a
number, type punctuation, add another level, and so on until all the
previous levels are included in the correct order, then use the "Number
style" button to add the number for the current level, followed by any
desired punctuation.

Furthermore, any given heading whose numbering isn't behaving can likely be
sorted by pressing Ctrl+Q.
