Word Quits when I close document window

I'm running Office:mac X on OS 10.1.5. When I close a
window in word, it usually quits with an error message that
says it quit unexpectedly and that other applications and
the system are not affected. This also happened when I was
running Word for Mac '98 on Classic 9.2.2, but not as
consistently. Does anyone know what is going on and how to
fix it?

First, look at the usual suspects:

Make sure Office is updated:

Mactopia downloads:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/download/default.asp

after any update, repair disk permissions:

OS 10.1.5: Run Repair Privileges (same folder, or download from
Apple: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106900

With Word closed, rename the Normal template and delete the Word
Settings (10) file from the preferences folder
(~:Library:preferences:Microsoft:, where ~ is your home directory).
Empty the Trash. Word will create clean versions on startup.

If that doesn't solve the problem, post back with any more detail
that you have - does this happen only when the document is being
saved? Do you have Fast Saves turned on (it shouldn't be)? Automatic
backup (should be)?
