Word Template Locations

Hi,

Thought this might be the best place to ask this; if there's one better,
let me know and I'll slip over there.

I've been checking out where Word 2002 (Word XP) stores its templates.
Apparently they are all stored in
C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Templates\1033 by default, although
1033 doesn't seem to be visible from within the dialog box itself.

I know I can use the Templates dailog to do some simple file
manipulation of the templates, etc., but ...

How does Office decide what templates to show in the dialog box? I
can't seem to purposely save a .dot to anything but the General tab of
the Dialog box. Say I wanted to put it in the Memoes tab; how would I
do that?

Thanks in advance for any light you may be able to shed on this. Feel
free to question me if I haven't been clear/concise enough.
Office 2002 on XP Pro SP2. Office 10 I think it is.

Regards,

Twayne

While that may be where Word stores the templates that come with the
software, the User templates folder is usually located in C:\Documents and
Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates.

If you create a subfolder in the above templates folder

C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application
Data\Microsoft\Templates\Memos

and store your memo template in that folder, it will appear in the Memos tab
of the File>New dialog along with the Contemporary Memo, Elegant Memo, etc.

If you called the folder My Memos, and stored your template there, a new tab
My Memos will appear on the File>New dialog that contains only the templates
that you store in that folder.

Aha, I knew it was something like that but couldn't get my head around
it!

Thanks much,
