Word Virus scan

I am not able to stop the lengthly "Requesting Virus scan" everytime I start
Word. I have read all the previous postings on this same subject. I use
Norton System Works and the office plug-in is not turned on. I uninstalled
and reinstalled Word - that causes me even more problems - now when I click
on a document Word opens but can't find the document. I have replaced
normal.dot. I have searched this forum I have searched the Symantec site. I
only find suggetions about turning off the Plug-In. I think it must be a
registry entry, but have no idea where to look.

Here are instructions from Office MVP Beth Melton for Norton Corporate
Edition that may help in your case:

If Norton AV was installed at one time then the DLL for the Office
Plug-in could still be registered.

Search for : officeav.dll

If you find it then go to Start/Run and run the following command:

regsvr32 /u "<path>\officeav.dll"

Here is a KB article that provides a few additional details. It does
not include information on Norton CE but it will contain additional
details on the unregister command if you need them:

I forgot to mention that I had found this unregister procedure in my earlier
searches. I tried it again toiday and was unsuccessful again. I get a RegSvr
window that says," Dll unregister Server in "C:\Program Files\Norton System
Works\Norton Antivirus\Officeav.dll" failed. Return Code was 0x8002801c.

So I Googled 0x8002801c and found
http://www.cryer.co.uk/brian/windows/trbl_nt_rgsvrfld8002801c.htm
I downloaded RegMon, but that didn't do me any good.

I had also found the Symantec link you provided, but all I saw was the same
ungegister information that was unsuccessful for me.

I checked Permissions in Regdt32 and appear to be ok there.

I should also tell you that originally I had used just Norton antivirus, but
have since upgraded to a couple versions of System Works.

I'm still convinced the problem resides in my registry, but I can't find any
more information.

I should also tell you that last week I manually removed an "officeav.dll"
from my registry thinking that would solve it, but nothing changed. Maybe I
shouldn't have done that. I had tried the unregister command before I
manually removed it.

Thank you for your help

Does the officeav.dll actually exist in the folder you are trying to
unregister it from? Locate the file using Windows explorer and then address
that folder in the unregistration process. eg

regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton antivirus\officeav.dll"
or
regsvr32 /u "c:\program files\norton systemworks\norton
antivirus\officeav.dll"

Yes, officeav.dll indeed exists in "c:\program files\norton systemworks\norton
antivirus\officeav.dll"

If I search my registry I can find it in two locations

I located another procedure "rundll32 c:\program files\norton System
Works\norton AntiVirus\officeav.dll,DLLUnregisterServer" when I try that I
get not response
