Word won't allow start up

I'm using a legal version of Word 2004 w/Leopard, latest version, on an intel iMac.

occasionally, when i open Word, i'm told there's another computer running with the same serial number, and it won't start. all is legal! i've tried to uninstall and reinstall the program, but that's so complicated it does not uninstall completely.

it began happening when i installed Leopard and had to create new administrator and passwords. that password is different from the previous one.

as mysteriously as it causes problems, Word will begin loading and work just fine. it might go a week or a month before it begins blocking me again.

also, every time i start the program this message pops up: "unexpected error occurred while trying to load the microsoft framework library." it happens on one of my two Minis, but Word works fine on that machine.

thanks your your help.

Well did you really try to check whether another Mac on the network was
using your copy?? Is there a chance someone copied your installation of
Office?? (the serial number is stored in a file in the Office folder)??

If the warning gives you a machine name or IP address, it could be worth
going to this computer and check whether anyone is running Office at
that time :->

I have never heard of this message popping-up when Office wasn't
actually in use on another computer,

Fpr this one, I would make sure Office is really perfectly up to date,

thank you for addressing my conundrum:

-Yes, a number of times. but it seems the serial number changes to a product ID number, and yes, those are different.

I have never heard of this message popping-up when Office wasn't
actually in use on another computer,

-i have three different serial #s for three computers. plus, i have shut the others off and it still happens.

Fpr this one, I would make sure Office is really perfectly up to date,

-i'm on auto update, in fact, an update came today.

Does the message quote an IP address?? (I've never seen the mesasge
myself).
If it does, it could help you figure out what computer it is coming
from,

Weird... I wasn't aware that a new version had just surfaced. You might
want to check, The latest update shoudl be 11.3.9 for Office 2004.

The same thing is happening to me- I'm getting a message that there is an illegally installed version of Office 2004- which started when I inadvertently left Word running on my laptop. I've quit the Laptop copy but still get the message and can't open my copy of Word.

I only have the two computers. I am the only user or either. Only trying to open one copy of the application now but can't.

How do I remedy the situation?

Thanks,
BillB

Hi Bill:

I suspect that the Office Notifications application (the Microsoft Database
Daemon) is still running on the laptop.

To test this, shut the laptop down all the way to power-off. If the error
goes away, that's it.

To continue to use your licence on two machines, you need to log off one
before using the other. You may find it more convenient to buy a Home and
Student version, that gives you three licences that can be used
concurrently.

Cheers
