Wrong user reported as having a file already open

Since our upgrade to Office 2003 SP1 and other hotfixes, when a user (user A)
already has a file open, and another user tries to access it (user B), the
wrong user is reported as already having the file open. When this occurs, it
is usually the same user (user b) that is trying to open the file that it
reports to having the file already open (user B). To be clear, if I am user
B, and I go to open the file, it reports that I am already in it, and of
couse provides me with the option to open a read-only copy, etc. How do I
fix this???????

How are they opening the files? Are they using File/Open or
double-clicking the document in an Exploring window?

If the latter then there could be a problem in the file association.
To recreate the file associations for Word go to Start/Run and run:

winword /r

Note the space before the forward slash.
