Yes, the grouping resources question again

I have read the posts on grouping resources and found that what I need to do
is either on Project Server or 2007. Having said that I was wondering if
anyone can tell me if there is something I am missing in this resource
grouping workaround that I have for very high level resource tracking
scenario I need to solve.

I know it is not a good idea to assign 2 resources (that signify the same
thing) to a task. But what if our tasks are not effort driven, and I assign
resource UNIX ADMIN 0% and then later resource Bob Bell (who is a Unix admin)
at 5% to task 1.
Then assign resource UNIX ADMIN again at 0% to task 2, and then resource
Jan Thompson (another Unix Admin) at 20%. And so on.
This way I can report how many tasks need UNIX Admins, and at the same time
be able to see if I am over allocating Bob and Jan.

It is very seldom that these tasks are dependent on each other, and the
tasks duration/completion are only tracked once every 2 weeks or once a month.

What am I missing? Potential gotchas?

Hi,

It is not obvious to count HOW MANY tasks have Unix Admin as a resource.
Still, you can see it in the resource usage view

Thanks for your reply.

I guess my question was not so much how I can count how many tasks UNIX
ADMIN are required given how I have set up my project - I know can use
filtering and resource usage as you have mentioned (as well as custom view
etc).
The question was more about any potential gotchas I am missing by giong with
this methodology.

A lot if this is also due to process we use to allocate resource to a task.
We want to know first what skill type resources the tasks need first. Then
much later we assign the actual person. Some tasks will not yet have people
assigned to them, but we still want to know what skill group they need so
that we can filter through and report off of that.
The skill group (UNIX ADMIN) obviously is just a place holder, and we are
not wanting to determine overallocation on that level (hence assigning this
resource at 0% on tasks).

Lastly we don't care that a task has 2 or 4 etc resources on it because it
is not effort driven.

Hi,

I generally see also Work or Units assigned to the placeholder but it is
given a very high Max Units to abvopid overloading; still its load can be
seen.
