Adding a new Group By for the Opening a Project

I can't find any help for how to create a new Group By when opening a
project. There is lots of help for the use of Group By for tasks within a
project but this does not seem to be relevamt for the Opening a Project box.
Does anyone know how to do this or where I can find the relevant help.

Hi Gareth,

I'm afraid I need a little more explanation here.
Do you really want to create a new group when opening a project? This can be
done in VBA but I fail to see the need. Why then? Why not prepare the group
and store it?.
Or do you want to introduice a group into the project? Or simply apply one?

Hi Jan

We have 50+ projects at our site so we want to create a "group by" by
department for example using some of the Enterprise Project Outline Codes.
This will make it quicker for users to find the project they want to open.

For example the project list would be by Enterprise Project Outline Code2 in
whcih we have department resonsible. The list would then show as:-

Department A
Project A
Project C
Department B
Project B etc...

It looks like this should be possible via some configuration. The Actual
setup of the values for the outline codes is performed in the Enterpise
Global project but I can't see how I can create a new 'Group By' when
selecting a project from th eopen projects box.

If you are using Project Server 2003, your Project Server administrator
needs to create a custom enterprise Project outline code field for this
purpose. If you are using Project Server 2007, the Project Server
administrator needs to create a custom enterprise field with a Lookup Table
containing the information on which you want users to be able to group.
Please note that in either case, your users still need to manually apply
grouping in the Open from Project Server dialog. Hope this helps.

Still not got the answer I need but your last statement of

asking how to do i.e. how can groupings be applied/set up in Open from
Project Server dialog

Hi,

So why didn't you ask that in the first place?
Applying a group is totally different from your first question which is how
to create a group.

There are two ways.
First, and most logical, create a view (view, more views, new) in the
Enterprise Global that has the desired group builtin as default.
Then throught tools, options, view, majke that view the default view upon
opening.

Second, you can enter a VBA statement in the ProejctOpen event of the
Enterprise global
Groupapply "...."

Hi Jan,

Sorry but I still think you are answering a different question. Your reply
seemed to be about applying a group and using it as the defualt view when
opening a project, i.e. one you have selected to open.

I am talking about the Group By that is in the "Open from Microsoft Office
Project Server" Dialog Box, i.e when deciding which project to open.

As before what I'm looking to be able to do is to list the proejcts that I
will select from i.e Open one from a list sorted as below.

Department A
Project A
Project C
Department B
Project B etc...

My original answer still applies: "If you are using Project Server 2003,
your Project Server administrator needs to create a custom enterprise

want users to be able to group." Can you confirm that your Project Server
administrator has created the necessary custom enterprise Project outline
code (2003) or field with lookup table (2007)? If not, this step MUST be
done first or else your PMs cannot apply grouping in the Open from Project
Server dialog.

Before I give you any more help, how's about you tell us what version of
Project Server you are using. 2002, 2003, or 2007? Let us know.

for the Server problems, so I did my best to interpret your question as a
desktop product question.

I have the same problem.
Our company has about 50 project schedules. We've created a custom field called "Status" that has a lookup table attached. We have statuses such as: active, redundant, completed, cancelled, testing.

When we start MS Project and connect to Project Server, then click on "open", there is a "group by" where you can select these project fields (custom fields) to group by.

We can do this manually each time, but we want it to default to group by Status when people go to open a project.

Any help is appreciated. There seems to be little info about it around.
