After modifying standard calendar, leveling not working

T

TraceyH

Hello,

From Tools/Change working time I changed the standard calendar to work
4hrs/day, 20hr/wk, 20days/month immediately after creating a new project file
Then I entered Task Name info. Next I entered estimated Work for each task.
Then I assigned a resource.

Next I leveled the entire project. In the Resource View I am noticing my
resource is showing availability at 8hrs/day...and the leveling is still
allocating him as working 8hrs/day.

What have I done wrong? I want all my resources on a project to be at 50%
utilization

Hi,

A couple of things. First I recommend that you actually create a new
calnedar based on the standard calendar and change that. Then make that new
calendar your project calendar. Make sure that the tasks have the project
calendar as their task calendar and not just leave the calendar for each task
as the defauly 'none'.

I suspect from what you have described that the calendar for the resoruces
is set to a different calendar and not the one showing 4 hr days. On the
resource sheet assign the proper calendar to each resource. You can also
refine that even more by assign resource availability between certain dates
as well.

Hope this helps a little.

I tried creating a copy of the calendar, changing it, and applying to both
the resources and the tasks as an experiment...no luck. The problem still
exists.

Also, I did have the standard calendar applied to the resources my original
plan, but not to each task.

Can you suggest something else?

Hi Tracey,

forgot to mention one other thing. Even though you set the default hours
per day to 8, did you change the start and finish times on each day in the
calendar to reflect a 4 hr day?

The default setting for hours per day etc, is used in calculating the
durations and start and finish times, hence you will find a 2 day task will
show 4 days with a setting of 4 hours per day, but leaving the start and
finish times as per the standard calendar will show the task as starting on
day 1 and finishing on day 2, hence the appearance that the resource is
working 8 hour days.

Hope this clarifies

Hi,

From wht you write I amm under the impression you only changed calendar
options, not the calendar through Tools, Change Working time. That's the one
deciding on the schedule.
In tools, Options, you merely defien what Project will call "a day" in
oyther words it absoluitely does not influence the planning.
