allow text block resizing

I cannot change a text block's width since adding words to it. It will grow
taller, but not wider when words are added. Any ideas on where to look for
the cause and how to fix this would be appreciated.

There are several reasons why this might be:
Select the shape and then
menu Window -> Show Shapesheet
1. Check the width cell, it might have a GUARD on the width value, or
it might have a formula.
2. In the Protection section check the LockWidth cell - it should be 0
3. Is there a TextTransform section? This is where it might get more
complicated.

Hi Paul:

I forgot to say I am using Visio 2007.

When I look at the shapesheet, it shows zeroes in all cells in the
Protection Group. I do not see a Text Transform group. I do see a Shape
Transform group however. All cells in this group have a GUARD appearing at
the start of them. What does this mean exacty and is it the cause of my
sizing issue? I also noticed cannot move the shape (a Box Callout shape).

When I tried to edit out the word GUARD in one cell of the Shape Transform
group, other words start populating the cell. I escaped out since I thought I
might be adding to my troubles.

Ideas?

thanks for the assistance so far.

Ah, so it's not a text box, it's a callout shape, different kettle of
fish entirely. Exactly which shape is it (and from which stencil) ?

Hmmmmm..how do I determine the answers to your questions? I am ignorant about
some of the inner workings of Visio.

thanks

When you opened the shape's shapesheet, the title would have told you
the shape's name.
The other easy way to determine this had been removed from Visio 2007
(Format -> Special) ! There was information shown there you couldn't
get from anywhere else ! D'uh!

Paul, what is missing? Format -> Special still shows the sheet number.

The key time when I need that information, it is when working on a child
shape and I can usually get the parent's sheet number by looking at the
child's Width or Height cell.

thanks for the tips. I checked and Format Special shows:
ID=37, Master= box callout: sheet.6, type= shape, Name =sheet 37

Does this help you?

Right, that shape uses control handles for its resizing. Select the
shape and you will see two yellow diamonds, drag these to resize the
text box.

whoo hoo. This works...I can't believe it was that simple! All this time I
kept selecting the text box ends (the green filled in squares) and they
wouldn't budge. I tried using the size/position window earlier by just typing
in a new width and it also wouldn't budge (which I find really
counterintuitive).

So, moving forward, whenever seeing the yelow diamonds on any shape, that's
the clue to what to grab for resizing...right?

thanks for the training.

Peace

Sorry, no, the green squares are what you would normally use, the
yellow diamonds are control handles that can be used for any purpose
like this.
"It depends" is the best that can be said here.
