Assigning ressources in resource pool

We have a lot of projects, that have been linked together in a resource
pool. All the tasks are initially assigned from each single project to a
resource, e.g. "Department 1". Now we would like to use MS project for
scheduling purposes, split all the work for department 1 to employee A,B,C,
etc.
We need to be able to do that from a central perspective (the resource
pool), rather
than having to go through 15-20 projects in order to locate each task and
assign them to ressources from there. Apparently we cannot change or assign
ressources in the resource pool. We are not in read-only mode. Is the
resource pool only created for viewing purposes? Is our approach completely
wrong, should we create some kind of a master project or similar?
Any recommendations on a book we should buy, preferably a real brick, 800
pages+, where we can find that kind of information?

Thanks in advance for any response on this matter.

It's not entirely clear to me what your setup is. The only resource pool I'm
familiar with common to more than one project is the Enterprise Resource Pool
in EPM (Server implementation of Project). In any case, I believe it's
necessary to open individual projects in order to change assignments--unless
you were to do it programatically. As far as books are concerned, there are
many good ones out there. Consider ProjectServer Experts
(https://projectserverbooks.com/), IIL (Dynamic Scheduling with Microsoft
Office Project 2003 - Amazon), or Quantum PM
(http://www.quantumpm.com/resources/publications).

Hi,

Yes, inserting projects into a master file would help but Proejct's
principle is that you assign a resoruce to a task so by all means tasks must
be visible.
Try to open the resource pool with the third option (... and all other
sharer files...) you will have a master file without any effort.
Does that help?
