Auto update kills all office applications

Microsoft Office just autoupdated, and now I can't open any Microsoft
Office Programs (use Word, Excel, and Powerpoint). The icon will
jump once (in the dock) and then stop.

Tried deleting Microsoft preferences
Also tried repairing disk permissions

Details about my Mac are as follows:

Model Name: MacBook Pro 15"
Model Identifier: MacBookPro2,2
Processor Name: Intel Core 2 Duo
Processor Speed: 2.16 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 2
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
Memory: 1 GB
Bus Speed: 667 MHz
Boot ROM Version: MBP22.00A5.B01
SMC Version: 1.12f5
Serial Number: W86454PPW0G
Sudden Motion Sensor:
State: Enabled

I'm running OS version Mac OS X 10.4.10 (8R2218)

Any suggestions about what to do or where to turn for help would be
appreciated!

Thanks

This problem isn't related to the MSO update, but rather the recent
Quicktime update.

This problem isn't related to the MSO update, but rather the recent
Quicktime update.

It is not a universal disaster. I applied Quicktime then Office updates
and everything kept working.

It would be interesting to find out a common cause.

Who me? OK, maybe CyberTaz.

Answer is probably the same. No.

If I were stuck with your problem, I'd be looking at all the likely
looking logs with console.app.

My gut feel is that something has trodden on a shared library, or
mucked up file permissions on a directory somewhere. Sort of like the
dll hell that affected you know what in the old days. There might be
something in there saying Word could not find (mumble) and was exiting.
Then again, pigs may fly.

If I were desperate enough, I'd toss a coin, decide whether it was
Office or OS X that did the stomping, restore a recent backup and
slowly work my way through updating one or the other till it fell over
again. I'd be hoping that applying combo updaters instead of software
update on the OS X side might get me all the way to a working box, none
the wiser for what really caused it. I'd be buoyed in that hope knowing
that others had not all experienced the problem.

You might try repairing disk permissions with Disk Utility.app
I think it is a magic like the close doors button on an elevator, but
it costs little to try it. (Repair permissions is supposed to ensure
that the permissions to read and write files and directories associated
with Apple BOM (Bill of Material) lists, each associated with an
application, are as they should be. I think Microsoft ignores BOMs, so
don't expect miracles. On the other hand, if something else happened to
upset something the Borg depended on, it might get put right.)

You have a reply in the PowerPoint group where you posted the *very same
issue*.

Please don't spread yourself around - it makes it harder on *you* as much as
it does those trying to offer assistance.

Hi,

Installing the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update v1.1 (Intel) also worked
for me.
Thanks for the advice!

Just one question, is it safe to install Microsoft Office update now?

Just one question, is it safe to install Microsoft Office update now?

Hi, I had the same problem with Office not opening etc.

Before logging on to this message board I tried to unistall Office
thinking my kids had buggered up the computer! I now realise its
something to do with the Quicktime Update.
The MAC OS X Combo update worked to a point as I was able to reinstall
Office. The problem now is opening Entourage I get a "This ID cannot
be opened with this version of Entourage" and I get the following
message when I open Word, Exel Powerpoint etc. "An unexpected error
occurred whilst trying to open framework library"

These messages are really helpful (Not) as they don't tell me how to
rectify the problem. Can any of you guys help please?

Thanks

Nick

Now that you've reinstalled - using the *older* version on the CD - you've
only gone part of the way. You need to reapply the 11.3.5 & 11.3.6 updates.

Essentially E'rage is telling you exactly that - you're having an older
version of the program try to access newer files. The "framework" error is
an indication of the same issue (usually)... Updates are missing or have
been ineffectively or incompletely applied.

Once you bring the reinstallation up-to-date & repair permissions you should
find joy in Mudville once again :)

You're very welcome!

Found another fix
In console i got this error:

dyld: NSAddImage() error
dyld: no suitable image found. Did find:
/System/Library/Printers/Libraries/libConverter.dylib: mach-o, but
wrong architecture /System/Library/Printers/Libraries/
libConverter.dylib

Simply delete the file works fine :)
