automating outline levels

T

Tomcat

Is there away to automatically create outline levels for many tasks by a
field. For example I am importing aroun 10,000 rows from Access into Project
and once in project would like to be able to "press a button" that would
create a summary task for all tasks with custom field = 1 and then again for
custom field =2 and so on. Sny help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks for the reply. I tried this and I might be a little confused but I
think my problem is slightly different. Let me more specific I think I was
to general in my previous post. I am importing around 10,000 tasks each of
which have a three custom fields. Field one can be A,B,C,D. Field two can
be 1,2,3,...,50. And field three can be 1000,1100,1200,1300,1400,1500,1600.
When I import into Project these tasks are not in any order and with so many
tasks and four outline levels this would be a huge pain to create summary
tasks for each level and then to indent the appropriate tasks manually. Is
there away I can automate this or do I need to create these parent tasks in
access and assign an outline level there.

Tomcat,
I don't know what is the meaning of such fields : Field one can be A,B,C,D.
Field two can
be 1,2,3,...,50. And field three can be 1000,1100,1200,1300,1400,1500,1600.
But if one or several of these fields can express four outline levels, you
can use them in an Excel spreadsheet to convert them into Outline Level
values comprehensible by Project.

I'm not certain I understand, but maybe if you (in MSProject) say "group by
Field1 then by Field2 then by Field3", that would place each imported task
under three levels of headers (which are similar to summaries). See command
Project/CustomizeGroups.

Does this do what you want?
