autonumber

I understand that Access attributes a number to a record
and one record is deleted well the number will not be used
anymore. So now when I scroll through the reference number
teh autonumber and the number showing on the scroll bar
aren't the same anymore. Is there anyway to change this?

I have no idea what number on the scroll bar you are talking about, but you
should not be relying on the position of the row in the result set to define
the data on that row. Simply changing the sort order will have you screwed
up beyond belief. What is it you need to do?

No.

An autonumber has one purpose, and one purpose ONLY: to provide an
almost-guaranteed unique key. Autonumbers will ALWAYS have gaps;
generally they should be kept "under the hood" and concealed from
users' view (accountants get all agitated when there are missing
invoice numbers for some reason...)

Also, the record count on the scroll bar has NO permanent connection
to the record on display. It's just a temporary, dynamic count - if
you filter the form, or change its sort order, the number will change.
It is a dynamic record count, not a static record identifier.
