Why when I back Up my database and try to use the database does it say
read only? Am I missing something?

To where are you backing it up?

A database stored on a CD will be read-only by default.

I'm backing up to a CD, as it won't fit on a floppy. In order to use it
do I have to transfer it to to the hard drive and then open it from there?

Yes. I think you would also need to right-click the file and turn off the
read-only attribute.
