Baseline help vs actuals

I’m trying to update our schedules to reflect actual start dates an
progress with separate activity lines so that the baseline schedul
doesn’t change. It seems that however I try to do this the baselin
schedule adjusts to the actual start date; e.g., the baseline start dat
for the X-ray / CT Scan pre-construction was set for July 1, 2009 bu
this didn’t take place until July 16, 2009. When I try to insert th
actual start date in the schedule the entire baseline schedule change
to match the actual start date so you can’t really track the actua
dates compared to the baseline dates.

What am I doing wrong

Hello jjackson3755,

I think things are a bit muddled in terms. Before you apply any
tracking, you need to explicitly save a baseline through Tools >
Tracking > Save or Set baseline.

When you save the baseline Project will copy:
Start > Baseline Start
Finish > Baseline Finish
Work > Baseline Work
Duration > Baseline Duration
Cost > Baseline Cost

The Start and Finish dates you see in a regular Gantt chart are
*not* baseline start and finish -- they are Scheduled start and
finish. So, if you supply an Actual Start, the Scheduled start will
be set equal to Actual start however the Baseline start is
unchanged.

Try displaying the Tracking Gantt which by default shows Baseline
bars (assuming you've saved a baseline) and Scheduled/Actual bar.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

To add to Julie's post... enter the day a task actually starts or completes
in the "Actual Start" or "Actual Finish" columns. They can be inserted.
