Calculated dates are not correct

I have a resources that can work 50% on a particular project. The resource
dialog shows that the resource is available 50%

I have a task that I have estimated to take 2 days.
I assign this resource to the task.
The completed date still shows 2 days from the start date. Since this
resource can only work 50% of the time, shouldn't the complete date now be 4
days from the start date?

Thanks!

Hi,

When you first assign a resource to the task, Project has no knowledge of
what the work will be, so it bases calculation on duration. Project
calculates work from there (it cannot do otherwise since you did not enter
work) work=duration * units

Enter work first (you can insert the column) or assign the resoruce through
window, split, where you can enter work and units in one go, to have
duration recalculated.

You have established a 2 day (duration) task. You assign "Fred" to the task
at 50% which means he will do 8 hours of work over the two day duration.

If your assumption is that it will take 16 manhours of work to do the task,
change the task type to Fixed Work. Now add Fred and assign him 16 hours of
work. Duration dutifully changes to 4 days. If you want to decrease the
duration add Barney to the task. Adding Wilma and Betty will decrease the
duration further to the delight of Mr. Slate.
