cannot modify any drawings

I was working on some flowcharts the other day and all of a sudden when I
reopened the charts I could not access anything on the drawings. No
highlight, copy paste, nothing. Most all of the options on the tool bar are
also greyed out. Any suggestions as to what has happened and how to remedy it?
