changing top and bottom margins in Word 2007 error: Settings youchose for left and right margins, c

I have a new computer at work (yay). It has Vista (boo). I am using
Word 2007 to do basic word processing tasks. I want to change my top
and bottom margins from 1" to .75" to make the document I am working
on fit on two (or three or whatever) pages. I keep getting an error
message that says: "Settings you chose for left and right margins,
column spacing or paragraph indents are too large for the page width
in some sections."

This completely baffling since I have no tchanged any of the items
cited in the error message. I have tried in three separate documents
to change top and bottom margins to varying sizes and I get this
message every time. I get the same message whether I try to make the
top and bottom margins larger OR smaller.

It should be noted that I can't change tabs, columns or indents under
the "custom margins" window. I can ONLY change top, bottom, right and
left margins. I'm not changing right or left (which the error message
mentions), but am leaving them at the default. I am only trying to
change top and bottom. It makes zero sense to me. I did go through
the document and make sure the right and left margins don't randomly
change from something I cut and pasted. Nope. They're a nice default
1.25 (or larger, so clearly within the page) all the way through.

On the Page Layout tab, in the Page Setup group, choose Columns. From the
bottom of the menu, choose More Columns..., which opens the Columns dialog.
Click on the One preset picture (even if it is already selected). This will
activate the "Equal column width" check box. Click OK. Now try again to
change your margins.
