Compare Docs

Hi everyone,
I'm having problems with the 'compare documents' tool. I
have a large (38,000 word) document with lots of images
(inline not the nasty floating type) and formatting
(headings, TOC, Appendices etc). I have saved the two
documents as new files (even tried saving as a new
version) and removed the field codes using ctrl + shift +
F9. When I compare the documents I get several messages.
I'm told that both the source and the compare documents
already have changes that might not be shown, even though
I have only just saved as a new file. I also get, 'One or
more fields with content larger than 750 charcacters' and
word cannot track these changes.
When I look at the output the 'compare' makes it is all
very messed up. Tables are all over the place and
highlighting of text that is the same.
All I want is to compare the documents and have the new
and edited text highlighted. Any ideas of how I can get
this to work, I'm guessing the root of the problem is
something to do with the warnings that the files already
contain changes therefore highlighting so much of the text.
As you can probably tell I have never used this before, so
any advice on this feature will be appreciated.
Many thanks in advance, Martin (using office 2000)
