% Complete & Task Start / Finish

Hello,

If a project resource completes a task earlier than expected, is it possible
to automatically accelerate the start dates on dependent tasks by marking the
completed task as 100% complete?

This does not happen in my current project plan. For example, task 25 has a
finish date of Friday, 5/5 but is actually completed on Thursday, 5/4. Task
27 is dependent on task 25 and thus has a start date of Monday, 5/8 because
of 25's original finish date.

I would expect that marking 25 as 100% would move the finish date for 25,
resulting in the start date for 27 to move up as well.

Both Task 25 & Task 27 have constraint type ASAP, no constraint date, Task
type is Fixed Units, Effort Driven is checked, Earned value method is %
complete.

Any way to do this besides manually moving up the finish dates when tasks
are completed early?

Thanks!

Tom

When you mark the task 100% complete, Project assumes it finished on
the scheduled date. You have to tell it that you finished earlier than
planned by entering an Actual Finish date, available in the Tracking
Table and in the Update Tasks dialog box, accessible by activating the
Tracking Toolbar. In your case, the Actual Finish date is a day earlier
than the planned finish date. If you have done your linking as you say
and have put no constraints on the successor tasks, your schedule will
update appropriately.

Remember that Project always has to assume that, unless told otherwise,
things went as planned.

Hope this helps in your world.

Ah, I have learned something new and can call my day a success! Thanks Dave!
