Cut & Paste problems

G

geoffatmhg

I am running Win XP Home edition with SP 2. It was a very recent CLEAN
install. I am also running Word 2000 as part of Office XP. I also run Zone
Alarm and McAfee AV + loads of Ram and empty HD space.

I am having the most aggravating problems with copying of text from the
internet into Word. Every time I try (and I do a lot) Word freezes and wants
to send an error report to Microsoft. Word then recovers my document and I
can work but without the text from the Internet as it failed to paste. The
only workaround I have found is to cut & past the text into Notepad and then
cut it from there into Word without any problems.

Has anyone come across a similar problem?

Thanks

Geoff

Do you have Word 2000 or Word 2002? Word 2002 is the version that
comes with Office XP.

If Word 2000 then there isn't much you can do except make sure you
have all of the updates installed which do help with the problem but
it doesn't eliminate it completely.

If you are using Word 2002 then this should no longer be an issue.
Since you have been experiencing a lot of crashes then have you
cleared your temp files lately?

Word may create a temp file when data is copied between applications
and if it runs into a rogue temp file then many strange errors can
occur.

Delete all temp (*.tmp) files:
- Exit Word and Outlook if you are using it as your email editor and
reboot your computer if you recently experienced a crash
- Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders (or Start/Search then select Files
or Folders)
- Change "Look in" to reflect the drive/folder to the root of your
Local drive.
- In the Named text box, type *.tmp
- Click the "Find Now" command
- Delete the temp files you find.

*Note that these can be deleted directly from the Find Results.

To group the files for a single deletion:
- Click any file in the list
- Press <Ctrl A> to select all

Should you encounter a "File in use" error, press <Ctrl> and click the
file to deselect it.

As an additional note, the Owner file is another temporary files Word
creates. If you have been experiencing multiple crashes or if Word has
been hanging on you then it is best to search for Owner files
(~$*.do?) and delete those as well. These can cause "file in use" and
"read only" errors.

For more information on this and a full cleanup/maintenance procedure
that should be run periodically, see this article:

When you want to paste and copy from the internet into Word, try this:

Edit|Paste Special

You will then have four choices of how to paste. "Unformatted text" always
works for me, but try the other choices and see what you get.

Sorry Beth Word is 2002. Sadly your ideas failed. But special paste form
Buck Frobisher works just fine. Can you tell me how to put special paste on
to my right click menu.

Thanks

Geoff

Dunno how to add it to right click, but here's a fast keyboard shortcut:

ALT-e, S

(hold down the ALT key, then press the letter "e", let go, then tap "s")

Faster than a speeding bullet!

If it's Word 2002 then it could also be caused by your firewall. When
you paste HTML in Word it's not being pasted directly off the Windows
Clipboard. Word retrieves web content directly so it does access the
Internet during the paste.

In any event, you can record a macro for using Paste Special. Once
it's created you can assign it to your shortcut menus.

- Go to Tools/Customize
- On the Toolbars tab turn on "Shortcut menus"
- On the Commands tab locate Macros in the Commands category
- Drag/drop the macro to the "Text" shortcut menu

If you want it to appear on all shortcut menus then modify the command
you just added to your liking by right-clicking the command and
changing the image, text, etc. Then hold the Ctrl key and drag/drop to
other menus to duplicate it.

Beth,

Do you have any links to sites where I could learn how to write a macro?
"Help" doesn't (for me).

Thanks!
