Database Rebuild Entourage 2008

R

rebekah

I installed the new office suite yesterday and had a small glimpse of the new entourage. I had to restart my computer and after trying to shut down entourage for 15 minutes I was instructed to do a force quit by the computer.

When I rebooted my computer, entourage would not load and said the database had an error and I had to rebuild it. I did the second option in database utility and selected rebuild (mind you this is over a 6 hour period). When the rebuild was done, I got a message that the rebuild could not be completed due to an error. I then did the verification option. It said there was a problem and an error and said to rebuild, so I did (this is at 3am). When I got up at 7am, the rebuild had "quit unexpectedly." I reported this to apple and am trying the rebuild again.

I have over 10GB worth of information in my Entourage database. Not being able to access this is throwing error messages throughout all of the office programs. Not having access to my emails is causing me problems for doing my job.

Can someone please help?

Quit Entourage

hold down the ALT-OPTION key while starting Entourage

You'll see a utility program which compacts, verifies or rebuilds the databases. After using the utility, you may have additional folders in /user/Documents/Microsoft User Data/Office xxxx Identities with date & time stamps in their names. These can be deleted after you're assured that all is working OK. Otherwise, delete newly-created folder and rename the older one (removing the date/time stamp).

I tried rebuilding the database to see if it would make things run more smoothly. Just doesn't work. I get a message saying 'would I like to quite Messenger and other programs'. I don't use Messenger but I say yes anyway. I then det the Dayabase verify program and nothing more - no dialog boxes, no option to run anything. I just have to force quit it and try again. Same if I try to run it directly. So I can't verify or rebuildthis database at all.

Rebekah,

I am experiencing your exact problem. Have not found a fix, but wanted to let you know this happened to me without having to do any force quiting. Just stopped working all of a sudden.

What version of the OS are you using. If you are in Leopard what type of
install did you use? Did you do a "clean" install (erase the HD and import
your docs with Migration Assistant at the initial restart after
installation), or did you upgrade over Tiger with all user accounts
remaining in place on the HD?

10 GB is quite large. Do you still have Office 2004 installed? If yes, then
open your old Entourage 2004 Identity and trim some of the data. If not,
then you need to be aware if you re-install Office 2004 that it will install
older fonts. See this article for an explanation on the new fonts and
locations. Installing Office for Mac 2008

<http://blog.entourage.mvps.org/2008/01/installing_office_for_mac_2008.html>

I can go into more detail about trimming, but first duplicate your Identity.
Next create a custom view to show older mail. Drag a custom view to the
desktop as an MBOX file as an extra backup. Delete that mail. You still have
it in your duplicate Identity. You might need to do this several times. You
could then import each of your trimmed Identities into Entourage 2008. Each
time you create a duplicate be sure to delete what you exported in the
previous one.

This should get all of your mail over.

Note: Spotlight search in Leopard is greatly improved. I drag my old Mail as
individual messages to the desktop and Spotlight can find them when I need
an old email.

Spotlight search within Entourage 2008 is also greatly improved. You'll find
it rock over the old search in Entourage.

I reinstalled 04 so I could get to my email. Are you saying I need to go in and delete old mail? I have quite a bit and it's all stuff I can get rid of, but once I do this, how do I go about switching over to Entourage 08?

I don't see your original post. Be sure to start your own post when you have
a question. It makes it easier for us to help you.

Once you have cleaned up Entourage 2004, Open Entourage 2008 and select to
import from your 2004 Identity. Entourage 2008 will update your Identity.
This takes some time depending on the size of your database.

Referring to the original post about inability to rebuild the office database I have the same problem. I tried multiple times to use the database utlity. I have also removed Office 2008 (using the Remove Office utility) and reinstalled but have the same problem: the application states the Office database is damaged, the database utility appears, I run it but an error message states the rebuild quit unexpectedly. Help!

If you can open Entourage 2008, manually move your data out into a new
Identity.
