Deleting a Resource from a Resource Sheet

Robin

I am working in an EPM environment where the Resource was initially selected
from our ERP and assigned to tasks within a project schedule. I have
removed the Resource Assignment from all tasks in the project schedule and
have saved the project schedule. When I then attempt to delete the Resource
from the Resource Sheet, I get a series of warning messages. The first is
'Resource must be removed from task assignments before it can be deleted'.
The next message, which can appear a number of times is, 'An error has
occurred, contact your System Administrator and let them know which project
the error has occurred in'. I’m thinking that these messages are occurring
because the Resource is assigned to other projects. It seems that I get the
second message as many times as the number of other projects that the
resource is assigned to – visible via the Resource Usage view. (Eventually
the messages stop and the Resource is deleted) Also supporting my thinking
is the fact that testing this scenario with a Resource that has no other
assignments other than the one I deleted him from, does not invoke these
error messages. Is this the case? If so, what is actually happening
‘behind the scenes’ in Microsoft Project to invoke these error messages?
Thank you.

In the future, please post your Project Server questions in the
microsoft.public.project.server newsgroup, as this newsgroup is dedicated to
the Microsoft Project desktop application only. To answer your question, I
suspect you are right about the resource's assignments in other projects.
To eliminate this situation, I recommend you do the following:

1. Launch Project Professional 2007.
2. In the Login dialog, DESELECT the "Load summary resource assignments"
option.
3. Click the OK button.

If you do not see a Login dialog, then click Tools - Enterprise Options -
Microsoft Office Project Server Accounts. In the dialog, select the
"Manually control connection state" option and click the OK button. Then
exit Project Professional 2007 and repeat steps #1-3 above. When you
deselect the "Load summary resource assignments" option in the Login dialog,
you no longer see your resources' assignments in other enterprise projects,
which is fine because this feature has never worked correctly, and is the
source of many frustrations for PMs, including when attempting to level
resource overallocations. Worse still, the Work numbers are usually WRONG
for your resources' assignments in other projects, which means the feature
is simply unreliable.

Beyond this, I would also recommend that if you ever need to remove an
enterprise resource from a project team, you should do this by clicking
Tools - Build Team from Enterprise instead of the approach you are using.
Hope this helps.

Hi Dale,
Thank you for your feedback. Using the Build Team from Enterprise dialog
box to Remove a resource assignment does not generate the error messages. I
will instruct folks to use this process.
