Disabling Resource Pool additions

Tina S

Hello,

I am using project 2003. I have a master project, with many projects
inserted into it all sharing one resource pool. I would like to prevent
inadvertant changes to the resource pool, that seem to be caused by typing a
name instead of using the drop down box when assigning resources to a task.

I have used tools> options > general and turned off the option of adding
resources and tasks. However, it still allowed me to resource names. When
saving, error messages popped up, but I could say okay and bypass the error
message.

What have I done wrong? Could it be that the individual project files have
to have the setting tools> options > general and turned off the option of
adding resources and tasks done first?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks,

Hi Tina,

Yes, I would encourage you to disable Tools > Options, general tab
"Automatically add new resources and tasks" in *all* projects connected to
the pool.

As you note, it will not prevent someone from adding a resource if they
choose "Yes" to the warning message, but then at that point, IMHO, it's a
training issue.

Hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks Julie. I will try this too. We have given up though and are making
all the folders and files read-only for now. They know enough to diable
that, but hopefully both of these options will discourage changes.

Hi Tina,
Glad to have helped and thanks for the feedback.

I'm not sure how the "read-only" option will work for you. The idea with
resource pools is that the assignments made in the project files connected
to the pool are written to the resource pool file. If you make the file(s)
read only how will project manager's update their files? I guess all I can
say is give it a try, and see if that option works for your group.

Hi Tina,
I have created a flag in the resource pool called "shared?". This I have
set to yes for all the resources in the pool. However if a resource is added
from a plan it will default to Shared?="No". Although this wont stop people
adding resources to the pool it does mean you can spot them easily.

Regards Simon
