Document to Template Transition

I have a couple of Documents that I particularly like the layout of, and would like to use regularly. Are there any guidelines on striping out the content, so that the structure necessary for being a template, remains...

Without knowing anything about the layout of your documents, it's hard to
give any specific advice. Generally, though, you should just be able to
select and delete the content that you want to get rid of. You may want to
display nonprinting marks first so that you can tell where any manual page
breaks or section breaks fall.

To display nonprinting marks, you can use the ¶ button on the Standard
toolbar (Word 97-2003) or on the Home tab (Word 2007-2010).

It depends somewhat on the version of Word. In more recent versions, you
have more control over styles (which are displayed, how to delete unused
ones). That said, however, if you remove all content from any document, what
remains--margins, styles, paper size, page orientation, and the like--can be
a template. If you want the template to include specific header/footer
content, then leave that in. If others will use the template, you might want
to leave some sample paragraphs in the most-used styles to illustrate how
they can be used. If the resulting document should include a TOC, you can
leave the formatted TOC field (which will display an error until paragraphs
of the included styles are present but will still work). Does that help?
