documents have errors when opened on other computers

My word documents appear fine when created on my laptop,
but the formatting is off when opened on others
computers. Figures appear in the wrong places, labels on
figures are reversed in some instances, figure/table
numbering is off, font formatting of text is erroneous in
places, some lines of text are scrunched together so that
it's impossible to read. i have windows XP and the other
computers have 2000 or 98, tho i don't know if this makes
a difference. any ideas?
