Entourage Erased all my Hotmail Messages

T

TrishaLynn

I recently downloaded Entourage on my new Mac. I have it synced with my work
email server & my personal Hotmail email. I have 2 questions:

1. After syncing my Hotmail account, all my messages were retrieved on
Entourage, but deleted/wiped from my Hotmail account. How can I keep the
emails stored in my Hotmail account, and not JUST on my Entourage account?

2. Is there a way to have separate inboxes for my personal & work emails on
Entourage? They all go to the same folder now.

Thanks!

Hi,

answers are inline.
1. After syncing my Hotmail account, all my messages were retrieved on

emails stored in my Hotmail account, and not JUST on my Entourage account?

Technically speaking, you did not *sync* your account, you *downloaded*
all the messages, and Entourage deleted them from the Hotmail server.
This is standard behaviour for POP accounts. You can go to
Tools>Accounts, double-click your Hotmail account, switch to the Options
tab and check the option which reads "Leave a copy of each message on
the server". This method provides two major drawbacks:

* there may be duplicate messages in your Entourage inbox, as Entourage
may get confused over time about which messages it has already
downloaded and which ones it hasn't.

* messages downloaded to and read in Entourage do not get marked as read
on the Hotmail server. This means that even though you read all your
messages in Entourage, all your messages will be unread when you log in
via your web browser. This is not Entourage-specific; it is simply the
way POP accounts work.
2. Is there a way to have separate inboxes for my personal& work emails on
Entourage? They all go to the same folder now.

My guess is that your work account is configured as a POP account, too,
and that incoming messages arrive in the local inbox, along with all the
messages from other POP accounts. To create a separate inbox, create a
new folder or subfolder for your work messages, then create a rule to
move your messages (Tools>Rules). For instance, you could specify that
all messages sent to your work address should go into that newly created
folder. If you need any help with this, post back!
