Excel and Word opening slowly

Word and Excel take about 30-40 seconds to open when I launch them by
double-clicking on a file. I thought it might be a network issue, so I
created a test file in word and saved it to my desktop, but still have the
problem. If I open Word or Excel by their respective icons, they open
immediately.

Is perhaps an anti-virus software set to scan the file when you open
them in office? Norton Anti-virus Office plugin can cause problems,
perhaps you are using this or similar? Disable if so.

We do not use Norton. It only happens on this particular computer. There are
no invalid mapped drives either.

Hi Moties,

Check that the Printer driver selected in
Word in File=>Print is readily available when
Word starts.

Also, is the templates location different now
than in perhaps a previous install?

(You didn't mention the version of Word you're using).

Hi Bob:

The version is 2003. This occured after I installed a new file server and
moved the user accounts to the new server. The DNS server and WINS server
also changed. I first thought it was network related, but it still occurs
with files on the local machine. The initial install had the files saved to
the server that is no longer valid. I changed the save settings to the local
computer. Appreciate your help.

Hi Patrick,

Did you check the items mentioned before?
The printer set in Word under File=>Print
and where Word is looking for the template
files when it starts/opens files?

Do you get the same issue with new files
created on the network?

Are you using the 'make local copy' setting
in Tools=>Options ?
