Field customization

My boss gave me an existing excel spreadsheet to import into project 2003,
the problem is the customization of fields in project to reflect the same
fields in the spreadsheet.
example: the spreadsheet has an hours column as opposed to a duration column.

How do I customized the field titles and column to reflect the excel
spreadsheet and perform the same calculations?

Hi shergardner,

A couple of questions:

1) The "hours" you refer to in the excel spreadsheet -- is it work or
duration?

2) What "same calculations" do you want Project to perform? Excel and
Project are *very* different products when it comes to what calculations
the tools perform.

I would also use caution when importing dates from Excel into the Start
and/or Finish fields in Project. In most all circumstances, the start
and finish dates of tasks in Project should be calculated by Project
based upon Project start date, working time as defined in the project
calendar, task duration, and predecessor/successor relationships.

You may change the field titles in MS Project once you have imported the
data by double clicking on the field (column) heading and entering a
title.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Shergardner,
The first question is, what do the hours on the spreadsheet represent,
task time span (i.e. duration) or task effort (i.e. work).

It would be helpful to know what other fields of data are contained on
the spreadsheet and how you want those to relate to Project fields. Then
we will be in a better position to help you.
