File names being capitalized

John Lowen

Frontpage 2003 seems to be randomly capitalizing file names
and folders in my website. I just reinstalled Frontpage a few
days ago. I know this is a configuration problem but can't
recall how to fix it. Any suggestions?

You avoid this by not typing the name of folders and files in capital
letters. Some programs also save in capital letters (FP doesn't).
To fix it get the case changer from
http://www.jimcoaddins.com/addins.aspx

Hi Jens,

No, I didn't type the file and folder names in capitals.
Somehow, roughly 15% of the names in my Frontpage
website on my hard drive were renamed when I reinstalled
them and Frontpage on a new laptop. When rename them
manually to lower case Frontpage now won't recognize
them when I open the folder!

Thanks for your help.

You must rename them from within FP in Folder List view.

Thanks Thomas for your response.

View > Folders > right click folder name, rename,
and then when I try that I get this error message:

Server error: Cannot rename "C:\Documents and Settings\John Lowen\My
Documents\My Web Site\_PRIVATE" to "C:\Documents and Settings\John Lowen\My
Documents\My Web Site\_private": destination already exists.

When I go My Documents > My Web Site
the -private folder is all in UPPER CASE too. If I rename a folder
to lower case, and then open FrontPage it is AGAIN in UPPER CASE,
but remains in lower case in the open mircosoft folder.

Weird problem. Suggestions?

Not sure if this helps, but you will not be able to save the renamed page if
that page is open. You must close it first. Hope this helps,
Dan

It almost sound like you have a Windows setting set to create all files and folders in uppercase,
suggest you ask about this in the Windows newsgroup.

Thanks everyone for a lot of good suggestions but
nothing has helped.

Windows isn't set to capitalize all folders, nor am I trying
to read an rename an open page.

So, I uninstalled Frontpage 2003 and then deleted my
existing website folder with the randomly capitalized
folder names. Then I restored the folder from an older
backup that had everything properly in lower case.
I checked the My Documents folder in several subdirectories
to confirm that NOTHING anywhere else was being capitalized,
which it wasn't, ONLY in the website folder when opened
with FrontPage 2003, in View > Folder List. I also rebooted
at every stage above just to be sure things were being
cleared out.

Unfortunately, after all that, the same thing is happening!

_PRIVATE
_CGI-BIN
_IMAGES

And all the other Frontpage folders are hidden from view
within Frontpage. (I can see them from My Documents.)
SIX seemingly at random file names along with their extensions
are in capitals once again!

Very frustrating....

Any suggestions other than formatting my hard drive?

THANKS!

Go here: http://www.hoverdesk.net/freeware.htm and download and install Regseeker

Open it, make sure it is set to make backups, and then click the histories link, and run the
function: Clean StreamMRU/Streams Keys.

Then run the clean the registry function.
It will find a lot of junk. Delete what it finds and then reboot.

Thanks Steve,

I appreciate the suggestion. I followed your instructions
to the letter and even did it all TWICE but it's not working.
The same folders and random files are capitalized again
when I open the folder list from within Frontpage as
described in my previous post. Oddly, when I open the
very same folder for my website from My Documents,
still, they are NOT capitalized. The problem must be
within Frontpage itself. I repeatedly have gone through
all of the pull down menus and can't find any feature
related to capitalization. Microsoft, driving me crazy....

Any other suggestions?

I appreciate everyone's help!

I've now uninstalled Frontpage and re-run
the regseeker several times taking out little
pieces of Frontpage. Also, I've search the
entire hard drive several times and deleted
even hidden files under application data and
elsewhere, all except two files which I can't
seem to delete no matter want, including
trying to change the attributes:

Under Program Files\microsoft frontpage\version3.0\bin:
FILE: fp98swin
FILE: fp98sadm
Description for both: Microsoft FrontPage Server Administrator

BOTH reappear when I delete them.

Suggestions? I don't want to reinstall Frontpage until
I can get rid of every piece of the previous installs,
which these by date appear to be. Something seems
to be calling / using them which prevents deletion.

THANKS AGAIN for eveyone's help!

You can't delete those - they are part of the Windows OS
