file open drop down freezes word & excel

I can no longer use the "file open" feature in Word or Excel. When I get the
dialog box open and click the drop down menu to select a different drive or
location, the current directory disappears and nothing ever drops down and I
need to end the process to get out of the application. I scanned for viruses
and spyware, uninstalled and reinstalled office 2003 and the problem
persists. Any suggestions would be most welcome.

If you have any unavailable network drives in the list it can cause
the behavior you describe.

If I have a vpn, however and don't have it connected all the time, how do I
get around this?

Unmap the network drives when the VPN is not connected. Inaccessible
network drives will slow down many applications, not just Word and Excel.

You may be able to create another Hardware profile and then when you
boot your computer select the appropriate Hardware Profile.
