File saving

I have Word 2003 with sp1 installed.

I have a large 3MB file that contains a table imported from Excel. Each day I
add between 200 and 600 lines to the table from an Excel file. Then I save the
file to disk. I see a small rectangular window open up bottom left of screen
with a green bar that fills from left to right and then this disappears after a
second or two. Next I see an icon showing a page and a moving pencil that
opens up and stays for a long time - maybe a minute or more. If I minimise the
file the operation stops until I maximise the file again.

This is probably the first big file I have worked on. Is this normal operation
when saving a file to disk?

What intrigues me is that I expected that the window with the advancing green
bar would be indicating that the file was being saved to disk. The icon of the
page with the moving pencil also seems to be indicating this? Which is it?

Cheers . . . JC
