Format existing text to numbers

I have an excel spreadsheet with about 200 columns, it was
set up as text. I need to conver to numbers. I have
tried to format cells number, but it does not work. I have
tried to bring in access to change but it tells me the
record is to large. Any ideas will be greatly appreciated.

1. Click on an open cell.
2. Press <ctrl><shift><~>.
3. Copy it.
4. Select your existing data.
5. Edit > Paste Special > Add

after changing the cell format try the following:
- select an empty cell and copy this cell
- select your range of values
- goto 'Edit - Paste Special' and choose 'Add'
