Formatting cells

I am currently using Excel 2003. I have a file made in
an earlier version of Excel that I have opened with my
new version. My problem arises when I try to right click
on a group af cells and "format" them. I left
click "format" and nothing happens. I can even highlight
those same cells, go to "Format" at the top of the screen
and click "cells" but still, nothing happens. How can i
correct this.

Is Format Cells grayed out? If so, perhaps the Excel file has
Protection turned on. Does Tools|Protection show Protect Sheet or
Unprotect Sheet?
