Ask in a Windows group for your operating system.

After furious head scratching, anonymous reader asked:

There are two ways to enter comments for a file:
In the application the file was created in (Word, Excel, etc.) go to
File...Properties and enter them there.

Alternately, and for files not created with a MS application:
Right click on the file name. Go to the Summary tab, and add your comments
in the box below.

Hope this helps

Thanx for the help. I'm obviously unfamiliar with this forum and don't even
know how to correctly direct a question, according to the previous
responders.

No problem. I'll never understand why anyone bothers answering that "This
isn't the right newsgroup", etc., when you can answer the question in the
same amount of time it takes to type that

They may not know the answer since this newsgroup is intended for
issues that affect all Office applications along with shared Office
components.

I do agree that if you know the answer you should provide it. BUT I
also think the poster should know they are posting off-topic for
future questions they may have.

There are several reasons that there are over 2000 newsgroups. A
primary reason is each group is dedicated to a specific topic and
that's where you're likely to find the experts and obtain a faster
response to your question.

This is good advice. Familiarity certainly helps. However, the Help screen
really doesn't let the user know what forum to post to. This user was
technically correct in posting her query to the Office General Questions in
that the answer was in using the File...Properties dialog in any of the
Office Suite products.

We tend to get too wrapped up in telling users that they're in the wrong
newsgroup or, even more reprehensible, telling them to "Google keywords".
While this would be fine to include, it really doesn't take that much longer
to also answer the question.

I've asked many a question in the forums, and have often guessed at what NG
I should address with it. And while I've received the abovementioned answers
on several occasions, I've also been given answers.

You MVPs are an invaluable source of information to we hacks, saving us
countless hours and keeping our frustration levels tolerable. We really do
appreciate your help, and mean no inconvenience when we're lost and looking
for answers.

Thanks Beth

I'd think the forum names should suffice. If you have an Explorer
question then one should post to a Windows newsgroup. But I also
understand that it's difficult to find the correct forum out of over
2000. :)

Although...now that I think about it, the underlying problem in this
case could be due to accessing them through the Office portal:
http://www.microsoft.com/office/community/en-us/default.mspx . There
isn't a visible means of getting to the Windows newsgroups or those
for other technologies. Looks like another area to suggest
improvement...

Now, not everyone gets wrapped up in telling others they are in the
wrong newsgroup. ;-)

Thanks, John. I think lately the regulars in the newsgroups are
growing weary of waiting for the kinks to be worked out of the web
interface. The new interface to access the newsgroups on the Microsoft
site was deployed back in June and since then we've been seeing a lot
of misplaced posts these days and there's the new Suggestion type post
that was introduced. Unfortunately there have been a lot of these
posts that weren't exactly Suggestions that should have been posted in
the newsgroups. Plus it's bringing a lot of new folks to the newsgroup
who aren't familiar with newsgroup protocol. There are those of us who
have been hanging out around here for years and there are days it's
hard to keep in mind the whole reason we're here in the first place -
to help and to learn from each other. :)

Thanx again, your advice hit the mark (in more ways than one).

Would you mind sharing which portal you used to access the newsgroups?
If you are uncertain then you can copy/paste the URL and I can take it
from there.

Thanks!
