How do I easily & quickly alphabetize the folder tabs?

R

I know that it's possible to physically move tabs or folders so they are in
alphabetical order. This is cumbersome if you have a lot of folders like I
do. Is it possible to highlite all the folders somehow and alphabetize them?

Not automatically. The only way is to manually move the folders/sections,
as you've found.

Thanks so much Erik. Will the new 2007 version be able to easily alphabetize them, or do you know? How do we go about requesting this feature if it's not part of the 2007? Thanks.

That feature is not present in 2007, either. Manual reorganization of
data in OneNote is much easier with full "drag and drop" between and
among all things in OneNote. Alphebetizing is still manual.

At this point, since the productis in a relatively late Beta, the
features are set in stone, and no new features are likely to be added.
Maybe in the next version ;)

No, alpha sorting of section tabs hasn't made it into OneNote 2007 to my
dismay. It has been repeatedly requested throughout last year but wasn't
high enough on the priority list.

I think the ON team was more focussed on improving navigation by eliminating
the sometimes confusing "folders with sections" concept (now effectively
dropped in ON2007) and implementing a "multiple notebooks with sections"
concept instead.

But ON2007 does contain lots of excellent new features which I like.

I particularly like one of the less-heralded new features, the All Notebooks
List, where you can see all your sections in all your notebooks at a glance
and rearrange (aka sort) the sections (albeit manually) to your heart's
content.

Anyone can download a public beta of ON2007 and take it for a spin right
now. Apparently it'll work right up until the product is launched in early
2007.

Folders are still there. They are now called Section Groups.

Is there any difference in functionality or is it merely a semantic change?

FWIW I would say sorting of pages and sections alphabetically was the
"feature we most wanted to do but couldn't fit in". Next time I trust.

Great news, Chris. (Just change "trust" to "promise" ;-)

Is there any more we can do to vote for this feature or does the request
have pride of place on the OneNote team's list of things to do for the next
Service Pack or upgrade (whichever comes first)?

ON 2007 SP1 maybe? :)

John Waller

By the way...I think
it would be safe money that future SPs will not add significant new
features to the product. SP1 was an anomaly.

Yes, I acknowledge that.

New features in Service Packs are an extremely rare occurrence and SP1 of
ON2003 in particular was an unusual version of this rare phenomenon with so
many new features added.

But there's no harm in asking now that my expectations have been heightened
by past events such as SP1, is there? ;-)

We include the Alphabetize functionality in our OneNote Toolkits. It is
especially useful when physicians are adding hundreds of patients and it
makes locating patient folders which are based on Patient Names much easier.

The code is pretty trivial, but we haven't tested with ON 2007 yet. I might
take a look at adding it as an "add-in".

Now you know someone could write a powertoy which does this. That is
something I want to do, but if someone beats me to the punch that
would be good!

Yes, seems to be a true need in this environment.
Might be similar with students and their "matricle"-number.

Great news!
Would be fine if this was possible.

I would like to say that not being able to sort is a basic feature that
should be included. I am a Project Manager, and I create tabs for each
client I receive an email from. So, I have one group called emails, and
within that group, multiple tabs for each person's name. I go into
LotusNotes and use the Send to One Note print feature, and everything is
great up to this point. After all the emails are in OneNote, I then have to
go and manually (very tedious), rename each tab with either the name of the
subject line from Lotus, or the date of the email. Once this is done, I then
have to manually reorder the pages by date and/or subject. If there is any
easier way to do this, please let me know. I am not a programmer, so not
sure if the tool kit would work for me.

Thanks,
Kent Carle

The easiest way to do this is using a tool that was meant to organize
your e-mails rather than using a tool that was obviously not designed for
the job. Just leave the darned e-mails in your e-mail software. There you
can sort by date received on one day, then by subject on the next, then
by sender on the next.

People always get into trouble when they try to use ANY program as the be
all end all, keep everything in it and never use any other program again
type of solution. Even though MS includes features that allow you to send
e-mails to OneNote that doesn't mean OneNote is really the best place to
store all of your e-mail. There are just too many things about e-mail
that OneNote just doesn't know about. Things that you are going to want
to do something about.

Next people are going to start asking to be able to reply to an e-mail
that they printed to OneNote.

Sections and pages do not alphebetize automatically, but section groups do!

I just moved all of my section information into section groups and quit
using sections completely. You can also group within the section groups to
even take it further.-
