how do i have my files default to .doc, .xls etc?

I just installed Office on my new PC and when I create a new document in
Word, Excel, etc, the file extension does not default to .doc, .xls, etc.
This also occurs when I try to open an existing document. It asks me what to
open it with and then it opens.

Is there a setting somewhere I am missing?

What file extensions do they use instead? Are you viewing file
extensions? What version of Office and Windows are you using?
